SABIC, SK Global Chemical to open polyethylene plant on Oct. 7

Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC) and South Korean petrochemical maker SK Global Chemical Co. are set to open a polyethylene plant in Ulsan, South Korea on Wednesday, October 7, SABIC said in a statement.

 

The project, SABIC SK Nexlene Company (SSNC), is a Singapore-based joint venture between the two companies which was formed in July.

 

Korea Nexlene Company (KNC) owns the plant in Ulsan, which has an annual capacity of 230,000 tons. The parties intend to further boost capacity with the construction and operation of additional plants globally, according to a previous statement issued by the firms.

 

The cost of the Nexlene technology and the plant was estimated at $640 million.

 

The plant will also produce metallocene based linear low-density polyethylene, polyolefin plastomers, and polyolefin elastomers used for flexible packaging, industrial and agricultural film, automotive, footwear, medical and construction, the July statement added.
